Preston Symphony Orchestra has players from the local area and further afield, with a diverse range of day jobs, ages and backgrounds. A Committee elected by members of the orchestra runs the orchestra on a day-to-day basis and the views of players are sought as much as possible in decision-making.
Players pay a membership fee, either annually or per concert, to cover the cost of venue and music hire.
We welcome new players!
More Violins and Violas are always welcome!
There are no auditions, but players should have reached at least Grade 5 AMEB or equivalent and have good sight-reading skills. Experience in ensemble playing is very useful.
New players are very welcome for 2021, and rehearsals for Concert 1 start on Tuesday 2nd Feb 2021. Rehearsals for Concert 1 2021 will be on Tuesdays.
Note: Our previous ‘normal’ rehearsal days are Mondays, and it may be that for the later concerts in 2021, we will revert to rehearsing on Mondays.
If you are interested in joining the orchestra for one or more concerts, please email:
The orchestra performs 4 concerts a year, each preceded by 8 rehearsals over 7 weeks (generally Monday evenings). Repertoire ranges from major Romantic symphonies to the premieres of new Australian works.
Join for one year: $100 ($50 concession – not working full time / under 25 / retired)
Or play for one concert: $30 ($15 concession)
All rehearsals are 7.30pm – 10.00pm.
Please arrive by 7.20pm to set up in time.
Rehearsals are held in both Preston City Hall and the Salvation Army Hall on different nights – please check. Both venues are in Gower St, Preston.
